To begin with ,my interest in tutoring started after I volunteer to work for Americorps. I helped students in reading and writing. During my assignment with Americorps,I had the opportunity in acquiring skills which has helped me in tutoring. I was assigned to work as a summer associate instructor for reading and mathematics. I participated in literacy program in which I assisted children who had trouble in reading and writing. After Americorps,I decided to pursue career in educational setting in which I worked as an instructional assistant at the ESL office.
My teaching style is that I provided one-on-one instruction and in addition to that I work as substitute teaccher for English as a second language.

Genuine, personal interest in the child; establishing rapport; establishing the student's mastery level, then building from there (instead of an arbitrary line which creates anxiety); affirmation of every step of progress/success; recognition but careful use of errors in non-judgmental, constructive correction; ease in backing up for review when needed; positive verbal and behavioral reinforcement to the student, including reports to parents about same, all these are things that come to mind. I have been recognized for being able to communicate and teach behaviorally-disabled and -challenged students. I think this is because of my many years as a minister. I received my Bachelors Degree in Economics and History with a grade point average of 3.3. Upon graduation, i worked for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC)as subject officer in Economics, History and Social Studies. WAEC is the equivalent of SAT or College Board in the U.S. My responsibilities included:networking with academics in developing curriculum, developing test items, scoring keys and marking schemes in the above subjects. My academic and professional development have provided me with the requisite skills to tutor high school students for two years in preparation for their High School Diploma examination.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taken many courses over an extended period of time. In 2002 I entered the Surgical Technology program at Jefferson Technical College; I managed a 4.00 and missed only a couple of days. During the many testing phases of the program I stayed and helped get other students through the program, I was commended on my drive and determination to help other students, all while maintaining my grade average. I pulled down some of the highest scores in the programs history. This didn't go unnoticed, as shortly after graduation I was asked by the Dean of Allied Health and Surgical Technology Program Coordinator to come back and teach. I taught all of the prerequisite core classes, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Human Growth and Development and Medical Terminology.
