My comments on tutoring Spelling : As a journalist who routinely faces deadlines that loom only five minutes away, I have never had the luxury of casually running a spell-check or referencing a dictionary. Internalizing the correct spelling of countless words serves as an indispensable skill in my profession. And for what it's worth, I know the tricks needed to assume spelling mastery, which I suppose accounts for my having advanced to regional spelling-bee competition as a youth.

I am foremost a writer whose 38-year, award-winning career is rooted in journalism. However, I also have an extensive teaching background. I have taught writing labs at St. Thomas University – Miami, Florida (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93); and I currently offer tutoring services to 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students from all over the world. My comments on tutoring Spelling : Wrong spellings can mess up a good piece of work and many people do not care reading over their writing to correct spelling errors. I encourage students to not be lazy learning their spellings.

I feel that learning does not have to be painful and so I make it enjoyable by simplifying the materials. I use powerPoint, lectures, I do role play, group work and challenging methods where students have to use their intelligence to answer questions. I make students solve questions in class to show that they understood the materials.

Ex-classroom school teacher with 10 years plus experience!

My teaching style is one that always tries to relate to the child and to have fun. Does the child enjoy video games, dinosaurs, soccer, dance, or a particular cartoon character? When I discover what it is the child enjoys, I bring that element into the subject we are learning about. If the child likes soccer and struggles in reading, I research about famous soccer players and find books on them. Perhaps, at the end of a teaching session, we go outside and kick the soccer ball for 5 minutes as a source of inspiration to get work completed. Bringing in other ways of learning through play and games is also something I enjoy. Playing simple math games or reading games is a easy way to teach a child, without them realizing they are learning.
