Ashley Frankian- Special Educator, Ell instructor

I am a strategic based teacher that enhances my students learning through finding their own particular learning style. Each student has and individualized learning approach to their studies. Once they find what works for them, they will succeed. It is my job as an educator to help them find that out. I like to use a multi modality approach so that students learn all different types of learning styles, this way they may pick and choose certain styles that work for them. For example, If the students are writing about a short story they have read, to help them get their thoughts on to paper, I would assist them with graphic organizers to prompt them to list of jot down vocabulary words or important people places or things in the story however, in a manner that helps them to do this with a proper beginning, middle and end. All of this is visually designed on the graphic organizer to help the ... read more

I have spent a lifetime educating myself and participating in professional development and then giving back my knowledge and skills to those that may benefit. I have found that I frequently learn as much from those that I teach as they learn from me. My History degree is not only a passion but the research and analytical skills I have learned help me present information in a way that is easy to understand and comprehend. As an Aquatic Education instructor I embraced those that were concerned about our environment and encouraged ideas to resolve issues.
Regardless of the demographics of the student population in the classroom, I have learned that it is as important to listen as it is to present information. As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.
I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.

I first began tutoring under the direction of Nancy Donohue-Berthiaume at Quinsigamond College. I turored in Introductory Accounting, basic and college level mathematics. In my Sophmore symester, I was presented with a challenge. A young man who was both Dislexic, and Mathlexic was failing basic mathematics. In less then 1/2 hour, I was able to help him go from failing grades to straight A's. Later, I tutored fellow students in Pre-Calculus while taking the course myself. I ended up with a 4.0 GPA in that class. Later, I was provisionally certified to teach in 7th & 8th grade english and mathematics and in recent years I have felt more and more, because of my desire to help other's I would like to persue tutoring if possible.

Each student requires a different approach to teaching. With this in mind, I prefer to sit one on one and work from the bottom up to try to figure out exactly where some of the issues may be. Once you better understand what it is the student isn't following, you must find a new approach to explaining the topic and reviewing it. I also believe the student must research answers on his or her own. The ability to memorize something is helpful, but it is more important to know how to find the answer or work through an answer. Often times students just memorize answers without understanding the buildup to the answer.
While at Nichols College, I took a part time job at the local Boys & Girls club in Dudley Massachusetts. Here, I worked with children from a variety of backgrounds on their homework and various other projects especially mathematics in which I specialize in. Many of th ... read more

I believe in being a coach to the student rather than traditional teaching. While I will go over any new concepts in a teaching format, I prefer letting the students figure out solving any related problem by guiding and making suggestions, as necessary, to lead them through coming up with a solution. I will sometimes let students make mistakes so that they can later understand the mistake and as a result more likely to learn the material in question more thoroughly.
