It is very important to assess what the student already knows and the level of understanding they hold at the beginning. It is also important to make sure that what they know is correct and that they are not confused or misunderstanding the material. After which, getting to know the individual style of learning for each student will insure that time is used efficiently and that the student is understanding and retaining the material being taught. Working one-on-one is the best teaching method; however, when that is not possible, working in small groups is also very effective.

The key to being a good teacher is being patient. I believe children learn best in a positive and stress-free environment. When a child does good on the work then I praise them and if they make a mistake then I explain to them the error in the homework. When I was a small child, I remember my teacher being patient and helping me along the way. Throughout my life I have been tutoring and teaching my peers. In elementary through high school, teachers would ask me to take time to explain one-on-one the coursework with my classmates. In college I naturally became the go-to person for help with coursework. My official experience, however, did not come until I was in graduate school. There I taught laboratory sections in animal and dairy science as well as tutored my classmates after hours. There is nothing that I enjoy more than figuring out how to convey information in such a way that my pupil will begin to really understand what they are doing and even be able to explain it back to me.
