Biology is one of my top subjects! Certified biology teacher with a second bachelor's degree in animal science / pre-veterinary medicine. I did biologically based research while in college, and for some time afterward. Have extensive background in several biologically based areas. I have taught 9th grade biology and am currently working as a biology teacher.

I am a certified modeling teacher. Modeling is a "hands on" inquiry based style of teaching. I teach through allowing the students to deal with a given problem or scenario. I then use extensive amount of questioning to help the child to use their logic to solve the problem. This not only teaches the science material; but it also helps the student to learn how to think logically and to ask themselves the right questions. In other words, I don't just teach the material, I teach students how to think critically in a way that not only helps the student to learn the science, but also in other areas where critical thinking is needed to help understand and solve problems.

After graduating with a degree in elementary education from Goshen College, I have gained many valuable experiences in the educational field. I have worked for two years in the elementary level at the first and second grades. I am currently working in the middle school level as a special education and Teacher of Record for 14 students with special needs. I would characterize my teaching style as relationally oriented. I want the student to know that I care about him or her. I may not articulate as much, but I want the student to see that I am giving my time to serve their needs and not my own. Loosely speaking, I am also a proponent of multiple intelligences. The creative teacher can usually identify a way to relate material and content using a methodology that connects. My teaching style is based in facts. I philosophically reject radical post-modernity which posits that truth is a moving target. The student does not have the right to tell me that 1+1 = 3 because 1+1 = 2. When I substitute for a teacher, I want to see a lesson plan. I do not want to be the classroom babysitter. If there is no plan for the day I involve the students in making one. I'm currently working on obtaining my teaching certificate, to go along with my bachelors degree in Social Science. Hopefully, I will be able to go on to receive my Masters in Education. I have been able to tutor students in reading, sentence structure, English and American history.
I love teaching and interacting with today's young kids. They fascinate me. Every child has different learning systems and sometimes it takes several tries to reach that special spot that opens the child's eyes to what excites them about learning. I am not overbearing. I am laid back, but at the same time, I make sure that the student learns what he/she needs to learn. I am very patient. I try to respect the student and not make learning seem like a chore. Building a foundation of learning skills, even during a short tudoring session can really change a student's approach in all of their classes.
I have taken education classes at Northern Kentucky University. At one point, I was considering on being a Art Teacher. I didn't finish with that path, but I did gain much experience with children and knowledge during that time in working with students. I have worked and studied special needs children as well. I still consider going back for a Master's at some point in education. I think this job would be beneficial in my goals, and for my students, and a great learning experience for us both.
