Vastly experienced, encouraging and patient tutor.

I taught grades kindergarten, first grade and second grade for a total of twenty-six years. Since then, I have tutored pre-k through 5th grade. My last assignment was tutoring a fifth grader in writing composition. I have worked as a tutor with several children on their reading, spelling and math skills. I worked as a UIL coach for creative writers in second grade.
To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions. I use hands on materials and lots of practice to teach math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience teaching not only at the college level, but also for grades 6-12. I was an English teacher during my most recent stay in France and I've tutored Accounting at Houston Community College. As an English teacher, I taught not only grammar and comprehension specifically to students that had issues with the grammar of English, but I also was involved in teaching Shakespeare to the students as well as many different forms of English literature. In addition, I have acted as a French tutor for many years.
I try to avoid lecture in teaching. For me, personally, instruction comes from helping the student understand the material on their own without having to directly be told everything. This comes through in creative exercises that help the student to understand the concept better and to hold onto the idea much easier.

My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : I have attended many writing workshops and know a large amount of writing prompts and exercises to get the creative juices flowing.

I worked for an organization called AS220. It is an arts organization with a youth program that works inside the juvenile detention facility and also has a community program for youth in group homes and recently released from prison. My first position was incorporated art into the curriculum of classrooms in the juvenile detention facility to enhance the learning experience of the students by making it hands-on. My goal when working with students is to fully describe the steps necessary to solving various classes of problems, often in an outline form, for it is in learning these steps that a student becomes an independent learner. I like to work through as many examples as the student needs, gradually working them into the problem-solving process, until they are able to work a few completely on their own, or, in some way, demonstrate understanding of the material.
