My comments on tutoring Basic Learning Skills : Over 30 years experience teaching basic skills to elementary school students.

I have over thirty years teaching experience in the Chicago Public Schools. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, a Master of Arts degree in special education, and a Master of Divinity degree. I have taught children ages 3 - 15 and tutored youth up to age 18. I am particularly skilled at helping young children develop readiness skills.
I believe that learners are most successful when they are confident in their abilities. I generally begin by assessing a child's present independent functioning level and slowly building on that. Nothing is more motivating than intrinsic rewards, so I strive to make the learner aware of their growth. I encourage them to celebrate every break through and to minimize the importance of errors. I have always enjoyed playing the piano. And I took extreme satisfaction from teaching piano. I would sit beside them while they played the pieces I had assigned to them to practice since the previous lesson. If they had problems or questions about something, I was there to help. We'd talk and laugh, and I hoped they learned through it all. Above all, I never wanted to yell at them or berate them, because I knew they'd never learn if they felt pressured or thought I was there only to critize them. While I don't think I ever had any junior Beethovens, I'd like to think there are several people out there now who still enjoy sitting down at a piano every now and then to play something.
