I am currently a part time math teacher at a junior high school and an elementary school teaching assistant. I am a part time math tutor and am looking for new students. My experience as a math tutor ranges from middle school level to adult. I graduated in high standing with a bachelors and masters degree in engineering. I worked as an engineer for four years and then decided to go into the teaching field. As an engineer, I used the principles that I now teach, helping me to develop a strong foundation as a math educator. I am very patient with students and am able to adapt to their individual needs. I believe that education should present as much material to the student as possible, which includes using various textbooks, lecture, and inquiry. After that, it will be up to the student to assess and construct the information given in order to form his/her own opinion about the subject matter. True education and learning is ownership of the subject matter which comes through effort and discipline and a little bit of guidance. Since April 2007, I have been a substitute teacher at both the Watkins Glen High School and Middle School. Frequent subjects include English, Psychology, and Physical Education. I belong to a writers group which meets at the local library every first and third monday. I belong to a chess club that meets at a coffee shop every Thursday. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with a minor in journalism from Oswego State University. While in school I studied psychology and child development as well as great works of literature. I have always had a knack for grammar and spelling and I enjoy proofreading documents and helping others to develop their ideas. I am familiar with many books in literary canon and I am interested in reading other books that teachers are including in their curriculum. Although I have no formal teaching experience, I do have been developing my teaching style for many years while I worked with the developmentally disabled. I learned to identify a teachable moment, which is a time at which the student would be most receptive to learning. As a tutor, I would create those moments and boost confidence by encouraging the student to explore the subject in the way that is most interesting to them.

I feel it is important to understand what is different and unique about every student. Not all students will learn in the same way, nor will they find their desire to learn in the same way. I feel it is my duty as a teacher to find what these ways are for every student. Differentiation is vital to the learning process and can only be executed effectively if you know your students.
