I started teaching Music in 1984. I taught part-time, temporary while pursuing education goals and working as a professional musician. In 1998 I became an adult educator, and in the following nine years I taught GED, Workforce, Computer and ESL. I learned to speak Spanish from some of my ESL students. I very much enjoy teaching in a setting where the students feel comfortable enough to both learn and express themselves. I always find a higher success rate in the understanding and comprehension of the subject at hand under these circumstances. I love to teach children and find it both a challenge as well as an inspiration. When teaching I find it necessary to determine the learning styles of each student as well as areas of interest. Once these have been determined it is much easier to determine the areas of academic needs and teach according to how they best learn. Learning should not be seen as a chore but rather as an opportunity to succeed in life. Whenever possible I include technology into the curriculum to enhance teaching. If teaching a large class it may be necessary to break into small groups to focus on the needs of certain students while providing enrichment activities for others. Positive reinforcement is the key to a student becoming more confident.

I have 26 years experience teaching Spanish and Latin at all levels (graduate and udnergraduate) at Austin Peay State University. Included are three years of part-time teaching Latin and Spanish at the Clarksville Academy, Clarksville, TN. 2 years experience teaching Spanish and Linguistics at Arkansas Tech University.
