A Little Bit About Me...

I have master’s degrees in Mathematics and Statistics with related work in Physics and Astronomy. My 20 years in education includes teaching at various colleges and high schools providing instruction in Statistics, Physics, Calculus and College Algebra. One of my more gratifying experiences was as a Learning Center Instructor working one-on-one with students in a wide variety of subjects. More recently, I worked with a middle school girl who had been bored and ranked as mediocre in public school, but was actually a child prodigy in need of more challenging material!
In my disciplines, the value of understanding totally outweighs rote memorization and learning of “recipes” for solving problems. My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.

My goal is to provide the best educational experience for my students. I truly enjoy working with young people and helping them learn. I believe that all children can learn regardless of abilities and backgrounds when provided with the appropriate learning environment. I also believe that each child is unique and has different styles of learning, and how these students learn should be incorporated as part of their learning experience to help these students reach their academic potential.
