I believe learning is about confidence. I have seen numerous students doing poorly in courses because they were convinced that they were not capable of learning the subject matter. Small successes help to build confidence in order to move on to the subsequent challenges. This can be different for every student, and the tutor needs to adjust to the student. A tutor has to be able to do this or the student will not be any better off.
