My teaching methods vary depending upon the subject matter and the pupil’s preferences. I enjoy getting to know students and customizing their learning experience to the methods that will best serve them. In the classroom setting, I employ many forms of teaching, including lecture, memorization, demonstration and the Socratic Method when appropriate. I have worked with students from all backgrounds and age levels, and enjoy each student for their own unique personality and potential. As a professor, I taught statistics to undergraduates in two private universities (Case Western Reserve University and Dartmouth) for a total of twelve years, and biostatistics at the graduate level at Harvard and Dartmouth for 17 years. I worked as a substitute teacher for a charter high school in St. Louis, MO directly out of undergrad. I taught most subjects including Biology, Chemistry, Algebra, History and Language Arts. I feel comfortable in my ability to teach most subjects and have no issue working in difficult classrooms as I have grown accustomed to such environments working in St. Louis.
Being no stranger to difficult classroom settings, I understand that ideal teaching conditions rarely exist. During the past 5 years I have been a substitute teacher for Kentwood Public Schools and Excel Charter School in both elementary and high school classes. This experience has given me insight into what I feel is necessary for students to prepare for the future i.e college, skilled labor, technology etc. I have administered tests to evaluate pupil progress and issue reports to parents to discuss student progress and any problems that may exist.
Students that I have tutored/mentored have become very successful in their life after graduation from H.S./College. I know that if a child can read, and understand what they read, they can be successful in life. That is my first priorty in the education of a student.

I was a Missionary in Panama for fourteen years. Learned Spanish through a two-year course in the country. As a missionary, I went on to teach Literacy and Bible to indigenous peoples there. After coming home stateside, although not certified, I earned extra income by giving classes in English to Hispanics in my home. I also taught English to monolingual Hispanics through an Afterschool program in Northeast Elementary, Jackson, MI. I worked as a Paraeducator in Northeast Elementary, as a General Education Paraeducator, but I often subbed for regular ESL teacher aides in the classroom. I have been an instructor in secondary educaiton teaching English and Speech. I have directed a leadership training program for eight years where I have instructed men and women. In a church setting, I have led high school age and college age students as well as adults in education settings. I mentor adults in a variety of life situations.
