Over the years I've learned that there isn't much excel can't do. Like most people I had a basic understanding of the basic functions to automatically do calculations in cells etc. My first exposure to excels more advanced features was for an accounting project. I learned to use excel and its macro recorder to automatically maintain account balances based on user inputs. Since then I've learned and used (extensively) Visual Basic for Applications, the macro programming language for excel. One of the keys to my success is that I always find a way to make the material relevant to the student. I like to utilize information and/or topics that they provide as the basis of the lessons I provide. For example, if you have a spreadsheet from work that you need to know how to update or manipulate then I will use it as the basis of the lesson - this way you learn while getting the assign task completed.
