I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. I like to help students use their minds first instead of relying on machines (such as calculators). When they work it out in their minds they learn the process and can apply it to other things. Reading requires the knowledge of pronunciation, syllables, root words for meanings, prefixes/suffixes, and how they are put together. It is more than just learning sight words. During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. I worked with students from a variety of backgrounds (ESL, freshman comp, MS candidates, etc). At Metro State I participated in a semester program teaching English in Puerto Rico, for which I received the ESL certification. I also TA'd for Writing and Designing for the Web.
