My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I have an Arizona teaching certificate as a special educator with a reading endorsement which recognizes my special skill in teaching reading. I spent 4 years teaching dyslexic students in a resource room setting in a private school in New York before establishing a new resource room program in a private school in Indianapolis. I led and taught that program for 5 years, successfully teaching many students with a wide variety of dyslexic symptoms. Since then I have continued to research new methods and have a range of teaching tools from which I select the ones most appropriate for your individual needs.

I have taught Special Education for over 20 years in a wide variety of settings. I have tutored about 100 students in a wide variety of subjects, using my deep knowledge and understanding of how we humans learn and retain information and skills. A Little Bit About Me...

Because I had such a hard time learning and focusing in a regimented, institutional-type learning setting in school, and yet was a brilliant child, I teach extremely well in a relational more relaxed approach. Rather than "shove information down throats" I am interested in each individual, and to get to know their personality and learning style. I have found that when there is relationship and trust between the mentor and the student, not only does the student learn the information more effectively, but as the mentor, I am able to teach and speak more clearly. I believe in starting each session with an example or review which allows the student to connect the task at hand with their prior homework/knowledge/experiences/interests, etc. To do this it is imperative to conduct an interest and needs assessment (mostly informally) at the beginning, and along the way, in order for me to be the best facilitator. Next, I ask critical thinking questions for each task at hand, and give choices of possible answers if needed. I give daily assignments for accountability, if the student needs to finish assignments on their own time. I don't believe in paper and pencil instruction only. I use various manipulative and lots of hands on acitivities. That is how I will teach in my class too. I absolutely don't believe that manipulative are for fun only and paper and pencil is the only way to teach a lesson plan. I have created many different lesson plans in the past. I use different manipulative when I teach math such addition, subtraction, fraction, decimal and so on.
