A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience teaching many different age groups, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, learning styles, etc. I know what it takes to learn, because I have done it before, and I take what I have learned and apply it to teaching. I am patient and energetic and I have a love for learning and teaching. I especially love to teach math, physics, and foreign language.
As a graduate student at the University of Maryland, I taught Russian 101 to undergraduate students for two semesters. I'm a strong believer in the Gardner's ideas of many different learning styles and types of intelligent. Some students are better audio, tactile, or visual learners. I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to find the best learning style for each student and build on that format through scaffolding. I love nothing better than to see the light bulb go off in a students mind. This also helps them to realize that learning can be a fun adventure.
I've been a special education teacher and held positions in resource and in self-contained rooms. I've taught students with learning problems in reading, math, and writing. I have also worked in the Lights on for Learning program and have been a home tutor for home bound students in the district.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process.
I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. Throughout those years I've encountered many special needs students and many bright students, tutoring in subjects ranging from English, Math, Social Studies, to Computer Science.

Creating a positive learning environment begins with building a strong rapport with students and coworkers. Another aspect of building a strong classroom community is motivation. I have worked extremely hard to develop a well rounded educational background. I have earned a BS in Exercise Science, with a minor in Business Administration. I also have completed several elective math and science courses as prerequisites for a Doctorate of Physical Therapy of which I will be starting in the 2009-2010 school year. I have had the privileged of completing countless written assignments, scientific papers, and homework assignments.
