I got my first teaching experience as a lab instructor for undergraduate physics labs and fell in love with the profession. I graduated in 1999 from NMSU with a degree in Elem/Spec Education. While attending school, I worked in a group home for troubled teens and at a facility for adults with disabilities. But my desire to teach children led me to tutoring at a private non-profit school for K-12. I worked there two years before starting to work at a facility for troubled youth. I worked there for one term before they closed down, and then started working with treatment foster care children through Mesilla Valley Hospital, a facility for children and adults with mental disorders. The simple love of learning that I exuded in the classroom setting was initially enough fuel for my fire to enjoy being in the presence of this age group. I found that allowing some sense of humor to the situation in instructing most subjects eased the pain for the children who may not have wanted to be there. All children did want to learn. My getting them together at such a young age to interact with one another and problem solve alone or together was a joy to watch. I constantly combined subjects to allow the student to make use of their initial talents. Be it in writing, speaking, the use of art or music, I wanted the student to explore each inner strength. For the time that I spent teaching, my experience included working in a newly established school in Saipan where I was involved with a class that had different age levels, such as third, fourth, seventh and eighth. This allowed me the opportunity to learn to work with various age levels as well as different nationalities. Also, I spent time working for the Las Cruces Public School System in which I was able to labor with teachers who had students with learning disabilities, plus regular elementary age kids. This occasion allowed me to appreciate the hard work the teachers put into the students and understand how hard it can be, yet to persevere no matter what may happen, since any little improvement is an encouragement to them. Teaching is a very rewarding experience. I especially like to see when my students progress to a higher level. I believe all children can learn but they often have different learning styles. As a teacher, I varied my teaching style to match a student's learning style. I like to do discovery labs and give the students a little information about the lab and they would create the lab. Students are very creative when given the opportunity and motivation to be creative. At the end of a class, I would like my students as they leave the classroom to think that they learned something new and also had fun.
