Special Education Teacher

As a current student studying special education and literacy instruction, I have had the opportunity to learn the newest and most recently researched "best practices" in teaching. I am currently certified in Special Education. My teaching experience has been significantly enhanced by my experience as a mother of a ten year old with special needs. I believe in creating a positive, professional atmosphere in a tutoring setting. I assess students based on specific needs expressed (by the student, parent, and/or teachers) and plan my instruction based on the data provided in assessment. I use researched methods in my instruction with a focus on direct instruction, modeling, guided practice, and continuous informal assessment. I have high expectations for my students as I believe that my job is to facilitate learning to each student's potential. I have worked with students of all ... read more

Every student is capable of learning!!

I have been teaching in the field of special education for the last 8 years. I have worked with children since I have been 13 years old and have gained an understanding of needs and wants from the students I work with. I have been tutoring for the last 10 years. I have worked with many students on the autism spectrum.
I feel that I teach to the students interests. I try to teach by the way the learn best. If they are a hands on learner I try to incorporate that into the learning as much as possible.

My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : Balance of hands-on and movement incorporated into lessons to teach to students' strengths

A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently an intervention specialist for students in grades 5-8, specializing in reading content and reading strategies. Last year, I taught students in the fifth grade, focusing in the scholastic areas of mathematics, reading, language arts, science and social studies.I was assisting students in an inclusion setting with some pull out resource room interventions. This past summer, I was excited about the opportunity I have been given to expand my teaching experiences through working with students with learning, behavioral, and emotional disorders. I am currently highly qualified for grades K-12 in all academic subject areas; reading/language arts, math, science, and social studies.
Through my teaching experiences, I have found the method of facilitating rather than dictating, to be a highly beneficial style of teaching. My teaching experiences have taught me that if students ... read more

Since receiving my BS degree from Ohio State, I worked first as a substitute teacher, then as a paraprofessional with children with a variety of disabilities. Next, for nearly 2 years, I was a Head Start disabilities specialist in northwestern Ohio. Most recently, for the last 7 years, I taught junior high/high school history and English at a private school on a ranch for troubled teenage boys in Washington state. I did have a provisional Ohio teaching certificate, but it expired while I was living in Washington.
I focus on building a positive relationship with each child so that I earn his trust, discover his educational needs, and identify learning strengths and weaknesses. I believe each one is priceless, endowed with unique character qualities and abilities. By treating children with respect and teaching them to respect themselves and others, I create a safe environment that ... read more

I have a wide variety of experiences in and out of the classroom with all different types of learners in all different age groups. I have taught preschool, middle school, high school, and adult education classes. In addition, many of my tutor students have been in elementary school. I work best with struggling students, and they have told me and shown me that I effectively helped them. I have tutored students in math, science, social studies, and English. I am certified to teach Biology, general science classes, English, and journalism. Reading and writing have always been my strengths throughout my own studies and jobs, but Biology fascinates me.
I am a teacher of individuals. I believe that people are so different from each other that each student really needs an individualized approach. While this is more challenging in a classroom, it lends itself well to tutoring. I read ... read more

I try to devote the day to getting kids interested in learning while covering the topics necessary. I cater to each child's needs and abilities and try to use their strength's to help their weaknesses. For example when teaching foreign language, if a child is not as strong in language as they are in math, I try to use formulas to portray language in a more concrete manner. I enjoy working with children of all ages and find that they enjoy working with me due to the enthusiasm I show them.
Since high school I have been aware that I wanted to teach. I am currently pursueing a Masters of Education, and finishing one of my specializations, (French). I have taught for several businesses. I also taught for the Worthington Public School system as a volunteer and teaching asssistant.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a doctoral candidate finishing up my third year in the Department of French and Italian at The Ohio State University. My major is French, with a specialization in second language acquisition (SLA), and secondary specializations in modern French culture and French cinema. In addition to my studies, I also teach French within the Department. In my five years of experience, I have taught the first four levels of French, in addition to intensive versions that combine two of the levels together. During the summer of 2008, I taught algebra and geometry to 9th- and 10th-graders in the Upward Bound program at Columbus State. Outside of school I have been tutoring for seven years.
