Math and algebra were my best subjects in high school and college. As a computer programmer, I would frequently have to solve a "word problem" before creating a program that implemented my solution. Some of my programs include a statistical analysis of traffic data, a calculation of yield to maturity of long term bonds, implementation of federal tax withholding for pension checks, a mortgage or loan program, and the creation of round robin pairing tables for chess. I try to see what the student already knows and go from there. Of course it is important that a student get an assigned math problem correct, but it is also important that the student UNDERSTANDS why something works and how that can be applied to other problems when a tutor or teacher isn't present.
