At our first session, I ask that each student complete a short quiz to determine their learning style (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc). Every child learns differently and I believe that discovering what works best for each student is the first step towards success. Once we figure out what his/her learning style is, I cater to this. If they learn best by reading, I'll prepare worksheets based on what they're learning; if they're hands-on learners, I'll make an activity.
My experience with tutoring began in high school, when I started assisting elementary students with homework through one of my clubs. Throughout the two years I was involved, I regularly helped 6 students, along with 6 students that I met with irregularly. I have experience tutoring children with behavioral issues, learning disabilities (dyslexia, ADHD, ADD), as well as students on the Autism Spectrum. I'm wil ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Every student is different; some require more help than others. As a teacher I have to find the best way for the child to learn. I want learning to be constructive, but also fun. I have discovered through years of education, that the amount of enthusiasm from an educator can make a huge difference. Therefore as an educator, I need to be patient and always encouraging. Adding details, examples, and stories to a study subject can help many students mentally see what I’m trying to teach. I have also found from my acting classes that adding physical movement to a lesson is very powerful.
At Hope College I received a liberal arts education. So even though I have a degree in music theatre, I am also well-educated in other fields. For instance I wasn't required to take Calculus in college, however, I took this challenging course and I passed the class with an A. I have also worked ... read more

I believe that “You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink,” but if it won’t drink, try putting salt in its oats. Everyone can learn, but to do any significant amount of learning they need to choose to do so. As an educator I can work with students to try and make the material such that they desire to learn about it. I find this easiest to do in a small group tutoring session, because you can see how the students are thinking and can cater towards how they learn best. In a large group it is a little harder to personalize a lesson or a project, but to a degree the class can be read and its particular struggles addressed. Learning requires work, and good teachers can motivate students to want to work for their education, and make that work manageable for them.
I graduated with honors from a liberal arts school with a BA in mathematics. During my time there I had also ... read more

My style of teaching is repetition of material focusing on specific areas where the student is having problems. One on one approach until the lesson is grasped by the student has proven to work more than group settings. Once the area of concern is learned the student usually continues getting it down pat on their own with me as backup or a question resource from that point.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am an entrepreneur with four years experience at organizing and operating a non-profit organization. My organization develops affordable, democratically controlled housing in downtown Kalamazoo. Building KCH, I gained many technical and professional writing skills. In addition, it was requisite that I teach my colleagues the very skills I was learning. I am also a lifelong learner. Western Michigan University awarded me a Bachelors in Science for completing my majors, Urban and Regional Planning and Rhetoric and Writing.
I have two children ages eight and five. We learn with each other through discovery, often turning to our dictionaries and computers for information. A Little Bit About Me...

My objective as a tutor is to increase students’ confidence in their ability to discover and understand the world around them. I immediately try to identify what the student understands. I start where the student is and clarify areas of confusion. By explaining a new concept in several different ways, drawing on examples from the real world, and making connections to a student’s own life experience, I help students gain a better understanding of material. I frequently incorporate games and hands-on activities in my lessons because they engage students and foster learning. My goal is not only to help students excel in school, but also to instill in them a love of learning.
I have a year of experience working with at-risk students as a high school reading intervention teacher in an urban school. At the beginning of the year, my students were reading at anywhere from a first gra ... read more

Opening doors and creating joy in learning is what I genuinely enjoy about teaching. Leading my students to see the world and themselves in new ways is one of the most satisfying aspects of the task. I teach with humor and compassion, but encourage self discipline and striving for personal best in each of my students. I believe that every person has the capacity to learn and teach critical and analytical skills, because the ability to think is the fundamental ability in all learning situations.
