My comments on tutoring Trigonometry : I took Honors Algebra II/Trigonometry in tenth grade and earned an A+ for my hard work. I even scored a perfect 116 on the final exam. I continued using trigonometry in advanced calculus so I mastered the basics in this course as they were common knowledge in Calculus.

Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.
I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.

I have BS degrees in education and industrial engineering. I also have an MS Teachers in Geosciences. I have worked for much of my career as an engineer but have also taught earth science at the high school level for two years in the recent past. I believe a good teacher should have the following attributes. First, they should love their respective subject. Second, they should have real world experience that can tie to the lesson of the day. Third, they should understand the needs and desires of their students. Lastly, they must have a firm but fair method of classroom discipline. I enjoy helping students understand the principles they are dealing with, rather than focusing on helping them simply "get the answer" to the problem at hand. My goal is for them to be able to generalize the concept and apply it in different contexts. To develop interest, I seek to discuss related information or similar problems as much as possible. For Physics in particular, this approach is key to providing a sound foundation for future learning.
Most of my career has been spent at IBM, where I built on my Physics background for a broad range of opportunities. I am now seeking to move into a teaching career and plan to start a Masters in Teaching in the Fall of 2009. During my educational development, I taught for three years in undergraduate and graduate school as part of the duties of a teaching Assistant. I have tutored secondary school students for the last 5 years in M ... read more

I loved learning mathematics throughout my college experience and during my student teaching in both high school geometry and college algebra courses I realized that my passion is my strength. I am able to use my knowledge of math beyond where my students are in order to attack the students understanding of the subject from different angles. This not only allows the student and myself to figure out how the student learns but it puts the student in good position to build on his/her mathematics knowledge.
I am a recent graduate from the College of Saint Rose in Albany. I graduated with a Bachelors in Adolescent Education: Mathematics. I started tutoring my peers during my senior year of high school in 2005. At college I worked in the student learning center as a mathematics tutor.

A Little Bit About Me...

Through my experience, I have developed a philosophy of education that is based around creating a positive learning environment, in which students are able to ask questions, grow as individuals, and explore their interests. I want to make math enjoyable and comprehensible for all students. I facilitate student learning by using a variety a teaching strategies including incorporating both authentic lessons and hands-on activities. This teaching style allows for students to take on an active role in their learning. I have found that if the students are able to create their own goals and monitor their own progress, then they are more likely to succeed.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent college graduate, subjects such as chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and geology are still fresh in my mind. I earned a BS in chemistry from Suny Oneonta where I was put into a diverse program. Over the last year I have received my NY Certification in coaching and have been accepted to Suny Cortland for Adolescence Education. In this time I have spread my scientific background to include more than just chemistry, taking additional collegiate credits in science with a focus on human anatomy and physiology.
To understand science all you have to do is look around you and ask questions. Science is a hands on subject, when you can touch something, feel it, watch it shine it will stick in your memory. My style is open and changes with the needs of the student. My goal is for the student to learn the material, as well as take an interest in the subject matter. When a s ... read more

I attained my first degree in Supply Chain Management from Syracuse University in 2003. After working in that field for a few years, however, I chose to change my career path. I then went back to school at the City College of New York to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering. I am happy to say that I am graduating this month (December 2010), and have not regretted pursuing this second degree at all. Through my college experiences I have completed over 220 credits in many subjects, with my strongest in the math, sciences and engineering.
Attaining two degrees has opened my eyes to many different teaching styles and ways of learning. I believe that the most effective way to learn and teach is to explain concepts and theories thoroughly before any application of these concepts. I believe that in order to really learn a subject, and not just memorize it, the theory must be underst ... read more

I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future. I also like to make problems relevant. Students often complain that there is no reason to study something – math, for example. But I like to show that indeed, they use it all the time and that it can be fun. Learning should not only be effective, but enjoyable as well.
At my Ivy League college, we were taught not just facts, but how to learn. This invaluable skill has stood me well and put me in an excellent position to teach. I have continued ... read more
