I try to find the teaching style that is going to work for the student. Are they visual? Do they need to touch to learn? Finding out how to teach them and then helping them learn skills for independent study are just as important as the material.

I developed some tricks and techniques on my own which have really helped me in solving problems very fast. I will be happy to share some with the student if he/she is willing to learn. The student needs to be hard working because I am not there to give them a magic formula to solve problems. They will be able to learn to apply their analytical abilities and solve problems with proper reasoning. I have rarely used textbooks in Math, the only reason I used books was to find more problems to solve.

First, find out where students stand. And, where they're going. In college, friends asked for help with their calculus homework. But, methods from my courses, did not work for them. To help them, I needed to review their texts, and find out the tools available to them. When teaching, you need feedback. When teaching mathematics, you might test a student, challenging them to solve a problem. If you have failed to communicate, then you may need to explore other modes of communication. Some students appreciate visual explanations. Other students work better with symbols or abstractions. When teaching one on one, you can take the time to find out what works best for that student.
