The motto of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society is "Love of learning is the guide of life". I live my own life by this ideal, and I try my best to instill a love of learning in my students. Too many students believe, indeed have been taught, that math is just a series of formulas and recipes to be learned and memorized. Understanding concepts doesn’t seem to be necessary or even desirable. No wonder students “hate” math! I feel that understanding the 'why' leads people to more easily grasp larger concepts and makes mistakes easier to recognize. After that practice is absolutely necessary: repetition IS the mother of learning. For children all this has to be presented in an accessible way. I try to contextualize problems in math and science in order to make them easier for children to grasp. Youtube has made potentially dangerous science projects unnecessary in order to illustrate certain concepts, while additional resources, such as the Khan Academy, make math problems easier to review.
