Believe in yourself, and you are half-way there!

My teaching style depends on the student. I am comfortable with trying different study methods in order to figure out why my student is having trouble with a particular subject.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I love being able to help students feel comfortable with the material they are studying. I have tutored numerous times throughout college, and would like to get back into tutoring students because I find it to be rewarding. As a student who went from living in Germany and being taught that there are many ways of getting the right answer, to moving to America where everything is taught in one way, I have learned to incorporate my tutoring skills to the need of each individual student. I try to figure out what works best for every individual and help them focus on their strength and improve their weaknesses.

I am not a teacher; I am an awakener!

Very skilled in teaching a variety of learning styles across the different areas of the multiple levels of intelligences.
I have taught in the education field since 1999. I am very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with a multitude of learners in a variety of environments. Early in my career I worked with adults that were mentally and physically challenged. I found this very rewarding and decided to pursue a degree in education, which lead me on my journey into the world of Special Education. I began working with children and young adolescents who had a variety of special needs and learning styles; I went on to specialized Autism and Special Education for K-12. After working with young children for many years I decided to branch out to work with young adolescents and adults pursuing their high school equivalency. Experienced and Proactive Educator

Experienced and New York State Certified teacher. I have over 10 years experience teaching students in grades 1-12 and 5 years experience teaching adults. I also have extensive tutoring experience. I have an MA from Marist College as well as a BA from NYU. I have designed and taught SAT prep classes (verbal/writing portion) as well as developing curriculum integrating diverse domains of knowledge to create a broad, deep and flexible learning experience for students.
I believe that competence and confidence are BOTH important in learning. Students bring their own knowledge and learning styles to the process. It is the teachers job not only to adapt instructional style to best support the learner, but also to help the student understand his or her own learning style and needs.

My comments on tutoring Speaking : When one teaches speaking, the great problem is volume. Our teachers often get the student to memorize the lines, which is good but exhausting. I try rather to teach the student the old Roman ideal: hold on to the idea, and the words will follow. I also teach the student to focus on the members of the audience, one by one, thus avoiding panic. I also believe that it is vital that a student be taught how to modify his talk as he goes along. Sometimes new ideas come up, sometimes new questions modify what you wanted to say... As one Roman said, you have to be like a gladiator -- you change your tactics, if necessary, right in the arena.

I hate to see students stuffed with words and ideas, as if they were thanksgiving turkeys. I love to help a student understand that much of the truth is inside his own mind. We must teach her, or him, to explore his own instincts, and develop his own style, and philosophy.
My experiences are perhaps too wide for this enclosure. I have 5 degrees, in American history and world history and French and Spanish, plus experience in writing and publishing. But my best experience involves my being able to take an overworked, frazzled student under deadline and teaching him or her how to pause, focus, and then get caught up and then get ahead. As Ben Franklin would say, we have to learn how to "make haste slowly." I teach a student to be calm, take a breath, and then go forward on his requirements -- in exactly the order that the situation requires.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching and have learned that the best way to teach is to listen. I have great patience and find it a challenge to find"the" way to teach a particular student. I learned much of this from my Father who taught for 40 years at college level.
In my job I have been teaching my clients for 30 years. While I hold a BA in American Labor History, I have a deep knowledge base of Central Asian, Near East and Asian history obtained from business experience. While my clients have been adults I have tutored children on an informal basis when asked.

A Little Bit About Me...

I taught a computer "cap-stone" class to graduating seniors part-time at the Katherine Gibbs school for 1 semester. There were approximately 14 Seniors in the class and we utilized all of the Office programs from the creation of letterheads to the writing of business correspondence to mythical persons about various subjects. Subsequently I tutored high school seniors for the Princeton Review, an SAT prep business, for about a year and a half. This experience included working with many types of students and was a perfect venue to utilize my extensive consulting experience. As a turnaround management consultant for over 25 years, I was continually "teaching" people to implement the changes required to succeed.
My teaching style is a combination of serious, in-depth theory and practical examples to demonstrate such theories, all with a hint of humor, followed by significant pra ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

After I left corporate America to further my education, I began to realize how much I enjoy academia. I have most recently been a business instructor at a university in Tianjin, China, where I taught Management, Finance, Operations & Marketing. During law school I excelled in the understanding of Business Law, Constitutional Law and Trusts & Estates Law. Other areas of interest are Ethics, English and preparation for the NASD Series 7 examination.
First, I believe a successful teacher allows the student to emerge in their individual creativity while grooming the student to play a significant role in a team environment. Second, a teacher must allow for mistakes to be made during the learning process as they are often quite instructive. Third, the ... read more
