I believe that being an effective tutor involves tailoring my style to the way the student learns. That is why I pay close attention to what seems effective for each student. When working with children, I try my best to be engaging, interactive, and fun. If necessary, I'll use props (e.g. building blocks) to help illustrate concepts, and I always try to ask many questions along the way to make sure my explanations are clear. With older students I will use a slightly more textbook approach, but keeping lessons interactive still remains essential, and props may still be useful in some circumstances. In both situations, I try to find which learning styles work best for the student and present lessons based on those. I studied Math because I love the subject. I have received a BA and am pursuing my Masters. During the last ten years I have taught math classes to middle school students as well as college students. During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension.
