As a parent of two children ages 3 and 8 i have had first hand experience in tutoring and teaching. I have also worked at Head Start for 5 years. During this time I have gained an extensive amount of experience and knowledge of teaching basic math skills, reading, and Grammatical skills. I have a tremendous amount of experience in many math and science classes. I have graduated from Cornell with As and high Bs in all of my general requirement math and science classes, including AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Physics 1,2, AP Calculus, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Physics of Waves and Optics, and the Mechanics of Solids. If I am tutoring a young person I contact the teacher so that I can find out what areas the student needs review in. Many times the teacher will give me the resources and materials to use. Also, I like to use the guide books for each grade that are sold in stationary areas of most stores. For tutoring in reading I've found the Leapfrog Reading Program is very helpful. I like to meet my students at the library so that I can use the resources found in the library, including the computer. Many times I use educational games because are very useful tools in learning, and they are fun.

While studying at SUNY ESF I held a position as a teaching assistant for Western Civilization. This involved grading exams and papers, preparing and giving lectures, and holding office hours to assist students with any questions or concerns they may have had. I also spent time volunteering to teach and after school science club through ESF Outreach for elementary / middle school aged children.
I feel as though every student will have their own niche. They will have a special subject that they enjoy the most and one that they despise. I think that figuring out how the child studies for the subject they enjoy will lead to an understanding of how to motivate that student to learn the subjects that are more difficult for them. Also, if the student's teacher stays positive and pushes him or her towards success by means of positive reinforcement they will succeed.
