My love of teaching comes from a lifelong love of learning. After graduating with a 4.0 from Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham, AL, I went to Auburn University to pursue an Industrial and Systems Engineering degree. After a few years of working as an Engineer with Alabama Power Company, I studied to earn my Masters of Business Administration from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.I believe that having a broad knowledge of all subjects is very important. Most of my experience is working with students who have issues beyond a normal student whether it be learning disabilities, behavior problems,or emotional/phsychological issues. I have taught in many alternative school settings, but I have also taught in main stream schools, both public and private. I have successfully taught students to read and write when the system had given up on them, and on the flip side of the coin, I have taught advanced placement/honors students. My teaching style follows one important rule: NEVER become so concerned with following my lesson plans to the letter that I miss what is truly important: teaching moments. A teacher has to learn to listen to his or her class and realize when the moment to abandon the lesson plan has come. This willingness to release some control over the class and allow it to develop more or less organically does not always come easily, however.
