I served in the US Army Reserves as a JAG Officer; and provided instruction and counsel to many young soldiers. A Little Bit About Me...

Through my previous experience my teaching style is focused on a strengths prospective. Factors such as motivation, encouraging discussion, critical thinking, challenging perception, and providing time to process the problem and initialize forming a conclusion on their own is imperative! While at Morton College, I accepted the position of Administrative Assistant to the President of the College. As you might expect, his academic background was Education. In many discussions about teacher effectiveness and research into that issue, it was shown that a teachers ability to listen to the students question and the number of possible responses with different interpretation of the subject matter that the teach was capable of, increased the teachers effectiveness. I earned two bachelor degrees from the University of North Carolina in December of 2007. From there, I chose to move to Massachusetts to participate in a ground breaking fellowship at MATCH Charter Public High School. I chose this alternate route to receiving teaching certification because of the classroom experience it provided me. In addition to earning certification and completing student teaching hours, I tutored for 20-30 hours a week in all subject areas in grades 9, 10, and 11. Though I have no official experience as a tutor, being the oldest of three children there was always an oppurtunity to help with homework. I like to teach using visual examples and being patient to allow the student to work at a pace they are comfortable with. I like to allow children to learn in a way they are comfortable with, each child is unique and I believe they enjoying learning when they are allowed to learn in their own style with guidance from a mentor.

I have tutored throughout school and into college. During college, I mentored and tutored two young girls from an under-privileged school for a local program. After college, I did some private consulting, helping people write admissions essays and prepare for the ACT and other standardized tests. I've also worked as a Google Answers Researcher and as a grants adviser to nonprofit foundations.
I like to get to know the child and form a friendship with him or her. Once we develop a rapport it is easier for them to open up to me. When the comfort level is established we then develop a mutual-learning relationship, as I can learn from the student just as much as he or she can learn from me.
