I received a BS in Computer Science, software engineering, and a minor in Mathematics. I worked for one year at the TLC, or Teaching Learning Center, where upper classmen would tutor other students taking courses they had already taken and done quite well in. I tutored mostly computer courses (programming, excel, etc), but there were also days when I was asked to tutor Calculus.
I like to start by encouraging the student to demonstrate what they know, and then give them a little nudge of guidance when they come to something that confuses them. If they're really stumped, then I try to teach them first from a conventional standpoint, then switch to a more example-based explanation. My teaching style focuses on teaching students how to find the big picture. If they understand what it is they are trying to do, then showing them how to get there becomes easier. Any student can learn math, and have the capability to understand numbers, this just comes harder for some and easier for others. In my past I have benefited greatly from some math teachers, and fallen behind in classes where I was not getting what the teacher was talking about.
