As a former probation officer in both the juvenile and adult population, I have worked on numerous community service projects and helped teach at risk youth life skills as well as assisting in acedemics. Additionally, I hold two degrees which has challanged me in the areas of reading and math. During this past year, I have tutored students from K-6 in the both reading and math. In addition, I have two boys of my own whom I continue to teach and monitor their progress.
Teaching style depends on the student. Establishing rapport at the beginning of the sessions and taking the time to talk to each student one on one will set a good foundation for learning. I am generally flexible, seeking to find what works best for a particular student. My wife and I once hosted a French teenager with the understanding that I would teach him a series of English lessons during his stay. It quickly became apparent that his language skills far exceeded the pre-planned lessons, so I instead developed new lessons on the fly.
