Educating the youth-academically, socially, and mentally.

I am a second year teacher. I taught 4th grade last year, and will be teaching 5th grade this school year. I am certified in both Missouri and Kansas. I obtained my degree from UMKC. I am very passionate about what I do and take it very seriously. However, learning should be flexible with lots of hands on experiences.
Student needs to first be extrinsically motivated with a goal of intrinsic motivation. Motivation is key in learning.

Everyone doesn't learn in the same way and by finding out the students learning style I like to then taylor how I help them learn based off how they will be able to retain the information best.
I have been working as a student worker at Blue River Community College for the past few years. I really enjoy being able to help students study and learn. My #1 goal is to help each of my students reach his or her ultimate academic potential. Every student has the ability to succeed academically. I believe that children learn best when concepts can be taught/explained to them in their own terms. Once a common ground can be extablished between student and teacher the learning process becomes much ea ... read more

A variety of instructional methods must be used to engage all students in learning. In order to help a child reach his or her potential, a teacher must be willing to acknowledge that student's learning style and work toward improving the child's weaknesses while also enhancing his or her strengths. As a middle school teacher for the past two years, I have discovered that most students learn best and most profoundly when they are allowed to partipate in their own learning instead of just taking orders.
As a student at Grinnell College, I was motivated to achieve at a high level. During my four years of college, I earned a BA in French and Biology. I also spent four months during my third year studying in France, where I lived with a host mother and attended classes at a local university. Currently, I am working toward earning my Master's Degree in Education at the University of Miss ... read more

Laid back, but encouraging. If a child is struggling, I don't think you should add fear and criticism to the situation. Having had Catholic nuns in all my grammer school days, pretty much put the "fear of God" into me, until I went on to public high school and college. then I was able to relax and embrace english and literature.
My BA degree was in Speech & Theatre. Who would have known that a shy kid like me would have excelled in public speaking, english, and theatre. I love the English language, even though I've had classes in French and Spanish. I started school when I was 4 years old (too early), and all my grade school years was challanged with education. Now that I am an adult, I feel that I have the experience to help children understand and find it easier to learn English and grammer, sentence writing, composition writing, essays, etc.

I taught English to ESL foreign language students using my guitar. I also let my students play my guitar and sing along. It was the only way I discovered, which would keep their attention so they would remain seated.
I taught college students computer science and applications courses at Sanford Brown College and National College. I taught 7th grade English as a second language for the Kansas City School District. I was also a substitute teacher.

As a graduate of the University of Phoenix and an experienced accountant, I am knowledgeable in the accounting process and principles required in business. I am proficient in verbal and written communications and was fortunate to have several of my college papers used as examples with which other students could learn proper formal writing techniques. I have supervised accounting staff for 15 years and am a patient and encouraging coach. My goal is not to just teach the answers, but to teach students how to think and process information on their own.
I believe the best way of learning is doing. To that end, I seek to help the student understand what is needed in a given situation and then teach the steps to achieving the goal. My teaching/learning environment is free from fear of failure, relaxed, and fun. The student will have the opportunity to ask questions, follow instructions, ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I've worked as an addiction tech, juvenile court officer, volunteered at Girls, Inc., an obituary writer, and a freelance writer. In each of those positions, at many a time, I had to assist someone with writing. My mom was a K-8 grade teacher, as were all of my aunts, so it runs in the family. All of them were English Majors. I just chose to write as a career instead of teach. But throughout my different job experiences, I've had to assist others with their writing needs. It can be as simple as telling them what they need for something, as in an obituary, to as detailed as helping them build a business plan.
Normally I would have them write something and then we would look at their work together and discuss how we could improve it. Once they see how they write, and then learn what they need to do to improve that, and why, they start to incorporate that writing style. We may ... read more
