I am an essentialist in philosophy, meaning I want the student(s) to learn material that is relevant to their experiences and that they can find useful to their lives. I want to engage them in their learning so that they can use many different learning styles. I want to show them that learning is something they can do for the rest of their lives and that they benefit from their own hard work. Everyone can learn, as long as they have the desire to learn and are guided by someone willing to help them learn.
Growing up in a family that did not value an education, I saw education as a way to make a better life for my self than gangs, drugs, and violence. One of the reasons that I'm interested in tutoring is that, although I love working with individual students and small groups, I am less interested in classroom management, discipline and the rest of the duties that come along with substitute teaching. I am excellent at relating to students and absolutely can help those who are willing to learn. I have clepped out or aced all english classes at the college level and have found a great interest in writing and reading papers and essays. I am extremely familiar with both APA and MLA writing styles and have had numerous hours and years of practice writing papers and essays for my college level courses. I received a 1 on my MEAP writing and a 30 on my ACT writing/English section.
Al though I have never technically tutored or taught a child writing, I am interested in helping aid a child's learning experience.
