I believe in an interactive learning environment where I am constantly asking students for their inputs and working through problems with them. I served in the US Navy for six years after high school, providing me with a wealth of world experience. I excelled in my studies in the Navy's nuclear power program as a machinist mate and engineering laboratory technician. I subsequently obtained a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tennessee and graduated Summa Cum Laude. As I finished up my studies, started tutoring for lower level math majors. This included Calculus I,II,III, and statistics. As I moved on through classes, I began teaching more abstract classes in Mathematical theory. This experience has helped me able to explain a complex topic in simple terms. I usually spend the first session finding a child's weaknesses in the subject. After this, I will prepare a list of problems for the child to work on under my supervision. I love working with children of all ages and abilities and helping them with academics. I don't believe I have a specific teaching style. I know that I have to be flexible and creative with each student. Everyone learns differently, and I feel it is my obligation to find what works for each child. Working with students in math, I like to ask what the student enjoys doing while not in school. I like to relate this to the math to make it more interesting as well as making it fun. This will also make the student more comfortable and lowers the stress level. In lower level courses in basic math up to middle level courses such as algebra, the methods used are integrating the content into the unsolved variables and/or word problems.
