I double-majored in biology in chemistry in undergrad, so the field of science and medicine is my first love and my strength. Composition is one of my top subjects!

I have loved English since I was in middle school. I went to college with the desire to graduate with a degree in English Education, but realized (after almost three years in this program) that the education program at my school was completely disorganized. I decided to drop education and pursue a degree in solely English with a special interest in literature. I have also starred in two plays that my church put on- one that required only actions and another that had a multitude of lines and musical sections. As for Sign Language, I have an aunt who was born deaf. Because of that, I started learning simple signs before I could talk. I am by no means an interpreter, but I can carry on full conversations and aid in the tutoring of students who want to learn.

Summer Reading/English Tutor

I tutored two boys ages 6 and 9 in the areas of reading and spelling. I have been tutoring them on and off during the school year for the past 2 years. I also teach English classes once a week during the school year at the Immigration Center of America (ICA) in Farmville, VA during the school year. Upon graduation from school, I moved to Guatemala, where I was an English teacher to Spanish-speaking students for a year. While there, I was able to work on both my Spanish and teaching skills. I have since been able to help English speakers enhance their Spanish proficiency State-side. I am currently working on my Masters in Counseling.
Each student is different, so addressing how best to teach each one will vary. I have found that the key to helping language students learn is first finding what will motivate them to learn. Learning a new language opens up a whole new world to the student, one they have never known before.
