I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams
I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.

My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : I taught pre-algebra at the 8th grade level for nearly 20 years.

I have worked with children and teens all my life. I was a camp counselor at a YMCA camp for 6 summers in my teens and early 20s. I taught 5th grade my first year (class of 36 students!) and then taught 3rd grade for a year, 2nd grade for three years, and 4th grade for three years--all in public schools. Then I taught English at the middle school level for four years in a private school. After that I subbed and tutored for a year until I was hired to teach in a K-8 building at the 8th grade level. I taught there for nearly 20 years before I retired, teaching science, pre-algebra, and communication arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.) While in that position, I was the sponsor of the science fair, building-wide, for nearly ten years. Since retirement, I have subbed, tutored, have written and published a book, and am writing a daily blog.

My comments on tutoring Pre-Algebra : With a strong background in mathematics, I can easily assist students to learn algebra. I will make sure students have a strong foundation in earlier mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. in order to make the learning of new concepts easier. Most difficulties in math stem from the failure to master concepts from earlier grades that should be firmly in place. If these concepts are not well learned, the student is attempting to learn a very new concept in addition to relearning previously taught concepts! Sometimes it is necessary to reteach these crucial concepts to insure mastery before a student can be successful learning algebraic concepts.

I am a retired elementary school teacher and taught for over 15 years in the St. Louis area public/private schools. I taught mainly in grades K-5, but do have Kindergarten and Preschool experience as well. I also have taught in the St. Louis Community College system as a substitute professor and also an instructor in the reading/writing lab. I tutored college students and began tutoring on my own while employed here. I am also a certified national trainer/educational consultant that trains teachers on how to effectively manage their classrooms to eliminate low level behavior issues. I give these full day in service training sessions in the schools upon request. I also present at educational conferences and break out sessions on this topic. I have been tutoring for almost 10 years now, mainly elementary school and middle school students, but recently have been teaching adults al ... read more

CPA- available for most of accounting and math courses

Worked in a public accounting firm (Big4). I have been tutoring financial and managerial accounting at school for two years as a teaching assistant. My expertise is in accounting including EXCEL. I also have very strong mathematical skills. The strategies that I give to students in preparing for an exam seem to bring good results.
Instead of telling answers right away, I encourage students to think and help them think in the right direction. I also teach students strategies on how to study effectively.

Tutoring has been a somewhat informal yet ever-present aspect of both my collegiate life and professional career. While focusing on pursuing my civil engineering degree at Purdue University, I realized the value that peers with non-engineering degrees saw in my unique gifts with mathematics. Although I never pursued formal teaching certifications, I have worked with several people, both recently and in the past, to realize their full potential to understand both basic as well as advanced level mathematics concepts.

I have 15 years of successful teaching and tutoring experience at the middle school, high school and college levels. I have consistently improved my students' knowledge of the subject matter as well as their grades and confidence in themselves. I always explain the material step by step and never assume that the student knows the material the new topic is based upon. I firmly believe that in my case the knowledge of the subject matter, ability to explain it and patience make the winning combination.
