I am a seasoned veteran of working for a large agency with multiple responsibilities across the State of Virginia. I have been tutoring, mentoring, teaching, training, and instructing on many subjects during my career. I have passion and dedication to whatever subjects I teach and I plan to impart a sense of enthusiasm in the subject matter with my students. I also teach coursework at the University level.
My approach is to encourage students to define their learning goals and then to discover how the learning the content can help them achieve their goals. I like to use real life examples to help students recall what they have learned. I am less interested in rote memorization. I tend to be structured and patient.

My comments on tutoring Biology : I took Bio 101 & 102 in college, which is general biology. I received high A's in the class both semester.

I am now a sophomore at Germanna Community College. I have taken Algebra, Biology, English, Contemporary Mathematics, and various psychology courses. I am continuing to take more math and science classes. As a high school student I took Algebra I and II, Biology, Duel Enrollment English, and various other courses. I have received high grades in the classes I have mentioned. I feel that the college courses are my strongest points, but high school English and Algebra are strong points for me as well. I have tutored various friends, mostly in Algebra. I have a college GPA of 3.8 and I am in an honor society. I feel that I could help many struggling students with various courses with my experience in these subjects.
What I try to do first is get the student to work out the problem, and as they are doing that I will work the problem as well. We will go over our answers together so I hav ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe that much of the difficulty in learning Science is that people try to learn a series of facts rather than a story. It is difficult to do well when a student is dependent on his/her ability to recall from extensive facts where no understanding of the interrelationship is appreciated. I believe scientific conversation regarding seemingly complex subjects can serve to demystify the material. Humor often helps in this. I have worked extensively with students who know the material yet can’t test well for a variety of reasons.
I have an undergraduate degree (BS) in Biology and a graduate degree (PhD) in Physiology. I have experience as a Professor of Anatomy in Graduate Physical Therapy curriculum. I have taught Anatomy and Physiology and to students from elementary school to graduate medical studies. I have most of my teaching years teaching Allied Health Students at the c ... read more

I graduated from Vanderbilt University in May 2010, and I am currently applying to medical school. In high school and college, I tutored in math, science, English, and test prep. Math and Science are my favorite subjects, but I also have much experience with tutoring English and grammar. I have also tutored people preparing for tests such as the ACT, SAT, and Gateway.
I always look forward to tutoring new people becuase I not only get to make a difference in their life by helping them master what they're struggling with, but I also get to learn about people and different learning styles. I view tutoring as a way to help others while improving my interpersonal skills. I value all the skills I gain from tutoring because they will be assets when I become a physician. Working with all ages from kindergarten to college has taught me patience and how to conform to different people's need ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I earned my BS in Chemistry with a GPA 3.57. I then took the GRE and ACS entrance exams for graduate school, I passed all four division with 20-60 percentile of the national avg. During my undergraduate education I was a tutor and earned level one training certification. In graduate school I instructed lab courses and tutored in a learning center several days a week. I am well experienced and qualified for tutoring any undergraduate and lower level chemistry courses; I have earned several A's and B's at the graduate level.
I do not know what my teaching style is. I have instructed large groups and had one on one learning sessions as well. I have dominated the communication time and I have been a listener. I have out right provided examples and I have merely provided encouragement for a student to continue their thought process. I believe everyone learns differently and therefore it ... read more

I was a corporate trainer for 3 years, followed by 12 years serving as a software instructor. Prior to and throughout this time, I also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible school, teaching everyone from 2 year olds to adults. I spent one summer as a reading tutor, and many of my software classes have been 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. I have volunteered as an SOL coach and in Head Start classrooms.
When I teach reading, I convey my love of reading. When I teach math, I convey the logical beauty of math. When I teach other subjects, I stress the importance of the material and how it is relevant to everyday life. In Sunday school this week, we combined with another class, so there were people there who aren’t usually. Several of them thanked me and let me know how much they got out of it. My response is that I am a teacher. It’s who I am and what I do.

I love teaching all ages, but have experience working with college freshman. I believe that these students are at an age where they need to realize their dreams and need help to gain confidence within themselves. My strong point is within Math, but also comprehension. Written words and puzzles are not always easily understood. Some people need facts to help them learn or examples.
I have worked with college students in the past, working with comprehensive learning and mathematics. I learned that each student understands in their own personal way; some learn by seeing something concrete and for others it is working through the steps in the problem that helps them understand. I have also had the experience of teaching a freshman seminar class where the focus was finding the students strong point or drive and having them research their major or likes to find what job fields might fi ... read more

As a tutor, I review previous test, quizzes and work with the student to see where the "disconnect" lies. Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing. As I understand how the child learns and ask questions to see "why" the student chose the particular answer, I am able to see the problem and use a different teaching style for tutoring purposes.
