My goal in elementary school was to be a marine biologist from the first time I went to Sea World. It was not until my last semester of my undergrad that I decided to change directions for my career and enter the world of teaching. I was a lab assistant in college and tutored chemistry, organic, biology, trigonometry, etc. I draw much of my inspiration from a summer internship conducting whale research off the coast of New Hampshire. I have taught on the secondary high school level for 36yrs.My various teaching assignments included the following: Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, Sports Medicine, Health, Physical Education, CPR & AED Training. I have also coached on the same level the following sports at one time or another: Football, Wrestling, Track, Baseball, Golf, and Softball; as well as being a certified official in wrestling and softball. I have also participated in a numerous amount of "inservice" experiences. I graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor of science in biology and a minor in communications. Throughout school, I helped many students with a variety of courses I had already taken. I have always worked very well with others and my communication minor only enhances this aspect. I am currently pursuing my masters in health care administration and human resource management. Since I am still furthering my education I think it will help me relate even more to students and their studies. I truly love helping others especially when it comes to learning. I really enjoy working with young teens. I have worked in high schools for 25 years in Virginia and West Virginia. I have always had good rapport with teens and have enjoyed interacting with them. I have been trained in the Constructivist approach to teaching, but have had to change my style of teaching in order to cover materials necessary for SOL testing in recent years. I know that students retain more knowledge when they are involved in discovering new information and would love to have the latitude to teach in that manner again.
