I like explaining things to people. I am patient and understanding and encouraging. I believe in having the student do it themselves after some instruction on how to do it, and providing feedback along the way. And then of course the ultimate test of doing it on your own with out any intervention from me. If they hit a road block or make a mistake you tell them it's alright, correct the mistake and have them try it again. So I believe in repetition and practicing the skill. When I work with students individually, I do not use pre-planned lessons. I assess their needs and develop custom tutoring sessions for their maximum benefit. I like teaching math because math problems all have a specific technique or method. Very little memorization is required. All math problems of a certain topic are completed using the the same methodology. Getting students to realize that is the key. Students who struggle in math will look at two homework problems in a section of a textbook and see two completely different problems. Once they understand the methodology is the same, they will begin to see the same problem repeated with different numbers (instead of two different problems). That is when I know I am successful.
