I taught 5 years of high school level science(chemistry, physics, biology, physical science), 3 years at university level, 1 year of chemistry at community college level. . During 5 years of teaching at the high school level, I worked with students rather than just lecturing to them. I developed a student centered understanding of what helps students learn. I brought the course material together in a way that was much easier for students to understand and remember. Obtained in my last job, showing an individual a three step process when learning something new. First would be to show and instruct on the basic level. Then after I felt the individual had grasped the knowledge, have them repeat the knowledge back with minimal assistance. Once the individual has completed an appropriate amount of the new task with the assistance of then instructor, they would then complete or demonstrate the task back to the instructor with no help at all. If they provide the correct answer or demonstrate the correct knowledge, they have completed the required learning. I would then test them on the material and encourage the individual to go back so the knowledge is fresh on their minds.

During my Associates degree, I enjoyed the opportunity to work in the Excel/SSS student-tutoring department. I was recommended by several of my professors to tutor in the subjects of chemistry and mathematics. I tutored in subjects ranging from introduction to chemistry to general chemistry 1 along with mathematics subject from basic mathematics all the way to calculus 1. 1) Give the person you are turtoring an opportunity to tell you where they are having a problem. 2) While working through problems monitor the person you are tutoring to see if there are other problems. 3) Suggest changes. Never force them. There isn't one correct way. Make a suggestion on how to improve and explain why you are making the suggestion. 4) Do multiple versions of a similar problem. The first time I will complete the problem, explaining each step. The next time the person I am tutoring will guide me through the problem, telling me what to do next. Then the person being tutored will do the problem while I observe. 5)Let them make mistakes. Explain why it is a mistake and show them how to detect it in the future.

Specifically, I start with the standards: what needs to be learned. Working backwards, I break the standards up into smaller concepts. Once the concepts are explained to the student, and the student understands the concepts, repetition begins in order to facilitate retention. Smaller concepts are then tied into larger ones.
