Flexible, down-to-earth -- I try to figure out how YOU learn best.
I am a retired college/university professor, and have been tutoring actively for the last six years (privately, as well as in a mentoring program at a community college). My tutoring experience has focused primarily upon mathematics, statistics, writing, Test Prep (e.g., ACT,SAT, GRE, math placement tests), chemistry and economics. Students have told me that I explain otherwise difficult material (especially in mathematics), in a down-to-earth and commonsense manner that makes sense intuitively.

I focus on the individual first - her style of learning, what makes her mind tick, how she responds to different methods of teaching. I believe that people are treated fairly by being treated individually. I also believe that people do not care how much you know until they know how much you care. I strive to set an example of genuine care and concern for the learner.
During the last five years I have taught others how to use social media, viral marketing, search engine optimization and social media marketing more effectively. I have been recognized by peers as a leader in the emerging space of social knowledge, which embraces a holistic approach to the social interactions an organization has internally and with customers and partners.

A Little Bit About Me...

To me, the best thing about teaching and tutoring is those teachable moments when you can practically see the light bulb go on in a childs head, as they finally realize they get it and are so proud of themselves! I like to involve my students as much as possible in talking problems or ideas out, and encourage them to discover the answers by thinking outside the box and looking at things from multiple perspectives. I like to use examples and visual aids as much as possible.
As a student in the Elementary Education program at University of Phoenix I completed 13 weeks of teaching to a first grade class in 2004. I also tutored multiple students at that time at two different elementary schools. In 2009 I tutored two boys, ages eight and ten, in multiple subjects for approximately three months, with up to three sessions a week. All students possess the ability to achieve academic success; however, many are unable to identify a streamlined path. I have worked with a wide range of students and have learned from each one a new teaching/learning style. One of the most important roles of an educator is to help the student identify goals and determine the most effective way to reach them. Furthermore, I believe that the role of a tutor is not to simply teach content; each session should make the student that much more independent as they learn the individualized strategies and techniques to reach academic success.

I believe that in order to help a student you must first be able to connect with him/her. That could mean understanding a student’s background, researching the latest video games or playing softball after class. For example, several of the girls I worked with at the JEI Learning Center, spoke very little English. Often they got frustrated and just sort of shut down -- stopped responding. At first I tried to have them draw pictures but when that didn't work, I asked them to show me something from home. They folded cranes and strawberries out of the paper that I gave them. Though the exercise didn't help them understand verb tense, it did help build trust between us. After that, when they felt insecure or confused, I was less intimidating.

A Little Bit About Me...

Four years tutoring at the undergraduate college level when I was an undergraduate student myself. This includes calculus 1&2&3 and college algebra. Also physics, chemistry and biology. I perused a double major of pre medicine and electrical engineering at the undergraduate level. I needed some extra money and found a lot of satisfaction in helping others and I found myself to be good at it and still tutor co-workers today. In addition I have done tutoring as a working professional for new college hires and junior staff for about 30 years.
In my opinion every student learns in a different way giving his or her own approach to developing an understanding of new unfamiliar knowledge. Also these same students shift their methods depending upon the material being introduced and discussed. It is for this reason that I seek to first try to carefully understand the students learning st ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to help the student.
I taught middle school and high school Language and Literature for two years at a private school. During that time I also tutored in the subjects of history, math, and science. I am a patient person – not many things bother me. I like to find the best learning style for each individual person I tutor. I also believe that all people (whatever their age) have value and the potential to learn if they are the least bit curious. I strive to be the person that people respect and also never forgets. I also like to have fun with my students. All people need encouragement and acceptance. These are the things that I give freely.

A Little Bit About Me...

With seven and one half years of experience as a home school teacher of multiple grades, I not only possess the experience but the skills necessary to teach several different grade levels. Organization skills, lesson planning skills, time management, creativity, self-motivation, and most importantly a passion for teaching in a personable way are included among my qualifications as a teacher. Eight years of volunteering in public school settings has afforded me the opportunity to reach many children at their individual level. I thoroughly enjoy children, their creativity, and their inquiring minds. I relish the opportunity to enrich their learning experience with positive and inventive means.
As a teacher of multiple grades, I prefer a unit study approach, allowing each child to learn according to his own learning style. Prescribing to a system entitled the 4Mat SystemTM, ... read more

Each child has an individual learning style the teacher needs to discover and build upon. I believe there are many tried and proven methods of education that schools have used over the years to educate students that are still valid. My task as a tutor is to find out something about the difficulties they are having with a particular subject or lesson, and then plot a path that will lead them to success in the particular lesson they are having trouble with. I must to my best to break down complex problems into a step-by-step process that will lead the student to understanding and discovery.

My only formal tutoring experience was during my high school years as a reading tutor for middle school students attending an at-risk school in Tulsa, OK. That said, I have guided, mentored and coached countless fellow students during my college career as well as professionals who have worked either with or for me during my 11 1/2 year career as an accountant. Throughout both my education career as well as my professional career, I have gained valuable knowledge in the areas of accounting, finance, math, economics, reading and writing, and I have enjoyed very much sharing this knowledge with colleagues and friends along the way.
My tutoring style is that of thorough explanation. I don't give the answers but, rather, coach the individual to determine the answers on his/her own and then provide the theory as to why the answer is correct. I am very compassionate, cheerful, and out ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In addition to being a substitute teacher for the Thompson School District, I homeschooled my own eight children for over nine years. During that time, I taught numerous homeschool group classes, including biology, cooking and english.
I work well with children. As the mother of eight, I have experience with all ages, and a variety of learning styles. I try to discover each childs strengths and play to those, encouraging individual learning styles.
