A Little Bit About Me...

I consider myself to be a "beginner" teacher as I have recently graduated college and received my license. I have spent roughly 500 hours in the field as a result of college course requirements, and I have successfully completed a 12 week internship (student teaching) experience. I have had the opportunity to work in many different subject areas and classroom settings with students of various backgrounds, ages, and learning styles.
I try to take a hands-on approach to teaching when possible. I find it helpful to use varied and often unusual objects and materials when teaching a lesson; it tends to make the material more memorable. However I am not above using the standard pencil/paper/textbook approach when needed.

I received my BS degree with the intent of gaining a MA in teaching. While I was obtaining my MA, I performed as a substitute teacher in several school districts. I had access to 2 long-term teaching positions. The first was for high school special education in history and the second was for 8th grade language arts. I did teach 1 full year as an intervention specialist for a junior high.
The first thing that I like to do as a teacher is tell my students why I chose my profession. I think a little insight as to who I am, lets my students know how passionate I am about my job. While attaining my genetics degree at Ohio State, I worked at the OSU Chimpanzee Center. After graduating, I started working for the Department of Agriculture in the Weights and Measures division. It was my job to try to "trick" the scales before they could become available for commercial use. I moved back home to Coshocton when I got married. I quickly found a job teaching adults within our county's GED program. I easily became the math and science "guru" with my background and began getting my Masters in Education from Muskingum University. Since November 2009, I’ve been teaching general biology at Logan-Hocking High School in Logan, Ohio. I have developed lesson plans, managed classroom learning, doing all the things any other science teacher would. In the summer of 2009, I worked in Albany, New York for the Albany Pine Bush Preserve conducting surveys in the preserve for the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly. When a question is asked, I am not going to simply just tell the student the answer. I would want them to think it out and try and figure it out for themselves. I would however guide them in the right direction and even ask them other questions they may know in order for them to figure out the intial problem. I feel that these types of interactions are a more effective way of learning. Also, writing things down helps tremedously because not only are you thinking it, but you're seeing it and reading it as well. I am a very easy person to get along with, and I am also very encouraging. I enjoy helping others whether it's in an academic environment or not.
