My comments on tutoring Social Studies : Skilled through HS levels

I use the Socratic method, meeting the students where they are, and using gentle questioning to build on that base. I start with the assumption that all children are gifted learners, and communicate that belief to them. It is essential to create a base of success upon which to build future success. I also spend time finding something to like deeply about each child; and discovering what the child is interested in. When an adult takes an interest in the child's world, and shares that interest in a positive reinforcing manner, it opens to door to learning.

I am a strong believer in the Socratic style of teaching which, as you know, helps students themselves to think through issues and problems and discover the answer as we move along. I have always enjoyed leading students to that 'eureka' moment where they have grasped a difficult idea or concept, put it in their own words, and communicated it back to me, the teacher. I have been translating complicated ideas into a language/format that others can understand since kindergarten. I have always enjoyed the process. As a college student at Carnegie Mellon University, I started working at Sylvan Learning Center as a math tutor specializing in Algebra and Calculus. I believe that teaching through lecture and hands-on activities is the most effective. A student that is capable of "teaching" the teacher a lesson and explaining the subject in their own words will have a greater understanding of the subject. When I teach and tutor I explain to the student the topic in my words, and then continue to ask for feedback until the student is capable of explaining the lesson in their own words.
While attending law school, I spent 2 full academic years tutoring first year law students. I tutored property and constitutional law. It was through tutoring that I was able to help several students improve their grades, both through emotional support and exceptional knowledge in the subjects.
