I used to hate math, now I love it.

I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.
i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.

A Little Bit About Me...

Over the years, I have been known as a good tutor because of my will and determination to make sure the ones whom I am tutoring are understanding the material rather than just remembering.For this, I have been known to be a strict tutor, but the significance of this matter is that I always have had students getting at least a grade level higher than what it was. For example, in the 8th grade right before a test to a classmate asked me to review the material that would be on the test, because she had not studied at all.I had ony 10 minutes to tutor this person but as a result, my classmate got a 85 out of 100. In this situation and every, I find out what can I use(weather it is something silly or funny)that help them remember, than I further it into giving them a better understanding of the material.

I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa.
