My comments on tutoring PSAT : I took prep classes for the SAT but took this test mainly as an indicator of where i needed to focus for the real SAT. However, the tests are very similar and because of my expertise on the SATs I feel beyond confident in both my ability to teach the concepts and improve scores.

I have helped my classmates and have had one official student as of this summer. However, I have learned how to explain concepts so that students dont just memorize, they will gain a thought process and applicable knowledge that will enable them to solve even the most complex problems. Having this mentality of preparation and success will being them to reach their goals.
Teaching new concepts, practice applying the new material, review, and more practice of the material to solidify the concepts.

A Little Bit About Me...

The stand that I firmly take as a teacher of English Language Arts is that preconceived notions of a student's ability are left outside the door to my classroom. Every student has a different personality, a different belief system, a different home life, and a different style he/she learns best in. However, every student can learn to write and communicate clearly, and to read and appreciate literature when provided with a rich learning environment, motivation, and explanation of the purpose/learning goals behind an activity or assignment. Evaluation and feedback from me and/or from the student's peers are viable resources that increase the student's awareness of his /her capabilities. The student is provided the opportunity to benefit from the feedback and perform at a higher standard in the future. As both a high school and a middle school teacher, I have experienced the value of learni ... read more

I am passionate about educating students and truly love being a tutor! I believe that every student is different and that tutoring is wonderful because it enables the tutor to get to know each student very well and tailor the instruction to that student’s specific needs. My tutoring style is very focused on learning the student’s needs and crafting my help to fit those needs. Additionally, I am very patient, understanding, and approachable. I have a knack for explaining difficult to understand concepts in a way that students can understand. Most of all, I seek to make a positive difference in my students’ lives, mentoring and providing a good role model in addition to providing excellent tutoring.

A Little Bit About Me...

Sine high school, I have worked with children in BOCES. However, I started college later in life, after children and marriage. I wanted to provide my children with an education that I couldn't afford since I knew nothing of grants in 1974. I started with my AA and did not stop until I achieved my MS. My education has taught me discipline, research, study habits, and critical thinking skills. I have tutored students K-12; in Language Arts, Reading, Literature, English, Parenting, Nutrition, Careers, and electives for 11 years. Each individual student has taught me something new.
My teaching style is to discovery how each child learns, whether it is visual, audio, movies, written, tactile, CD's, adaptive technology, and re-learning. I want my students to have success and become life-long learners while providing them with the tools that help them reach their potential. Learning ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Because I enjoy and see the wonder in science and I like to show that to students. If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expand their horizons, then they will be more open to learning. A common problem with individuals needing tutoring is that they sometimes do not think they have the "smarts" to learn the subject. My first objective is to show them they have the "stuff" to get it! Then I show them how it can be fun. This needs to be balanced with the practical need to get passing grades and complete the course work. My style is marked with a belief in the student and I encourage them and acknowledge their progress.
I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a gue ... read more

As a professional educator, I am dedicated to seeing all students succeed. I have earned two bachelor degrees, a BA in History and a BA in English, as well as New York State certification and my MAT Social Studies. I have tutored throughout my academic career, and continue to teach and tutor in a wide variety of subjects.
I am a strong believer in Multiple Intelligences. I know that first I must learn who my students are and how they learn if I am to teach them successfully. I employ the Socratic method often possible, and keep lessons as student-centered as possible. I frequently make use of the students' interests and technology to engage them. Students thrive when they see the usefulness of what they are learning, and when techniques are adapted to their needs.

I graduated Cum Laude from Manhattan College with a double major in Psychology and Communications. In addition to studying for two majors, I was also a Division 1 athlete and held 2 jobs. Seeing as I was very busy with extracirricular activities, I believe that my graduating with honors was truly a testament to how hard I worked. Since college, I have worked in two jobs that have really tested my gramatical, reading, editing and speaking skills. I tutored all types of students while in college and can't wait for the opportunity to tutor again. When I commit to a job, I follow through with 110% of my time and energy.

I have 15 years of experience as an educational program coordinator and have about 18 years of teaching experience with preschoolers, elementary students, teens, college students and adult learners. My expertise includes study habits, English/composition, note taking skills and psychology.
I am very patient and have a gift for breaking concepts and instructions down into smaller manageable steps. My technique is to lead the student to discover the answer rather than "telling" it to them. To help the learner understand and remember, I'll use examples in the form of stories, diagrams or demonstrations.

As a recent student, I am very familiar with what it feels like to be in the position a lot of the students are in right now. At the same time, I understand the best method about how to approach understanding the material in the easiest manner possible. The key is patience and practice. I firmly believe the best way to teach is to attempt many examples, rather than strictly lecture. If a student can see the pattern inherent in many of these problems, it makes understanding the initial concepts much easier. My main goal is not solely to have these students enjoy my tutoring, but to be able to provide a fun atmosphere in which they can effectively learn the material and gain an appreciation and excitement for the subject material.

My teaching style is professional, friendly, and peer to peer. I like to break things down for students and I encourage them to ask a lot of questions. I try my best to gauge how the student learns and teach them 'tricks' based on their learning style for committing what was taught to memory. Lastly, I try to build confidence in my students- from what I've seen, that's the key to success. I believe that people inherently know how to express themselves and have it in them to grasp complex concepts easily, it is just a matter of a little guidance.
My educational and professional experience are both concentrated on writing. More narrowly, analytical writing and legislative reporting. My experience tutoring on writing goes back to when I was part of a volunteer peer program, tutoring English as a second language students to assist them with mastering the English regents. A Little Bit About Me...

Through my teaching experience I have found it necessary to differentiate my teaching styles in order to be an effective teacher. Most often than not I have found that being a facilitator rather than a dictator is most beneficial to learning. I have learned that if students construct their own learning experiences they will not only retain information longer, but they will also become more confident in their abilities.
I have been Involved in the teaching and tutoring of academic subjects for the past 6 years of my life. I have a true passion for instilling the same love for education that I possess in my students. The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.
