My comments on tutoring Special Education : Masters Degree in Special Education

I have over thirty years teaching experience in the Chicago Public Schools. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology, a Master of Arts degree in special education, and a Master of Divinity degree. I have taught children ages 3 - 15 and tutored youth up to age 18. I am particularly skilled at helping young children develop readiness skills.
I believe that learners are most successful when they are confident in their abilities. I generally begin by assessing a child's present independent functioning level and slowly building on that. Nothing is more motivating than intrinsic rewards, so I strive to make the learner aware of their growth. I encourage them to celebrate every break through and to minimize the importance of errors. I stress that errors are simply stepping stones to the next level of competence.

Special Education is one of my top subjects! I am also a certified Intervention Specialist Teacher with 1 year of teaching experience in the middle school setting.

I use Positive Behavioral Supports (PBS) to establish motivation and classroom management. This includes breaks, class store, team competitions etc. My teaching philosophy is to meet students at their current level and push them to the next level to get them caught up with their peers. I assess students frequently to ensure they are making progress in their targeted area. As a tutor I will collaborate with school teachers and parents to ensure I am covering the same information the child is learning at school.
I taught for 3 years as a Hearing Itinerant Teacher in Illinois. My students ranged from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. I also taught for 1 year as a Special Education teacher in New Jersey. I taught 7th and 8th grade math. I have recently moved to Ohio and have received an Ohio Intervention Specialist and Hearing Itinerant Teaching License. My comments on tutoring Special Education : I have a minor in Special education.

I learn visually and by reading the subject materials. I teach by showing students what they need to know by reading and using visual aids in my teaching style. I incorporate technology in my teaching because some students are hands on. I teach students in groups and individually.

2 years ago when I quit teaching Spanish I thought I did not want to teach again, but when I was called upon to do a semester long subbing stint in a high school Emotionally Disturbed unit, all my original feelings for teaching came back. I love teaching and I love kids. They give me energy. I realized that I was meant to teach, just not Spanish. Special Education is definitely my calling. I am easy going, patient, caring and just want to see kids succeed. I want to make a difference. I want to make kids feel proud of themselves.
I have spent 4 years as a Spanish teacher and the past two years as a substitute teacher while working on my master's degree in Special Education. I have had many experiences with many different levels of learners both as a Spanish teacher and as a sub. In my classroom, students must commit to a level of performance that challenges them to reach their full potential. My expectations for my students are high, and by the end of the school year students realize they can achieve any goal set before them. This is a valuable lesson that they can apply to their lives beyond the classroom.
My teaching style is best described as eclectic. While I am always organized and focused, I vary my instructional methodologies to incorporate diverse activities and material to engage and interest students. By understanding human behavior and acknowledging the many different learning styles of students, I easily establish and maintain an excellent rapport with students and co-workers alike. As a result, there is a strong level of trust that develops which allows me to provide direction in working toward realizing shared goals and objectives.

I take the necessary time to learn the behavior and learning ability of the child in order to customize a teaching style that will be most beneficial. I believe that the most effective type of relationship between a teacher and a student is friendship to reduce any anxieties that may otherwise hinder the child’s progress. I am calm, well mannered, kind and devoted to the success of others. Teachers should be firm but not intimidating to the child. The learning environment should be safe, stress free and comfortable and above all positive. I have a strong belief that since children will be leading future generations then they need the proper skills to be able to solve tomorrow’s problems.
Throughout my high school career I have been devoted to academic success of my fellow classmates as well as my self. I continued this attitude in the accomplishment of achieving a BS degree in biol ... read more

A child needs to have fun throughout the learning process. He learns best when he is excited and interested. He needs to be able to choose his own books to read. This usually entails a trip to the library. And from there, we start with shared readings, repeated readings, running records, echo readings and choral readings, just to name a few.
As a teacher, accountant, mother of 4, I have seen so many changes in education. Thank goodness, we are looking more at the student as an individual than as a cookie cutter kid. One size does not fit all. My passion, is to instill the love of reading into all children, as I did with my own, and as I try to with my high school students. Reading is the base of all education. If a student struggles here, it will show in all classes. I use a method where I find out exactly where a student is in his reading, and through running records, I ... read more
