As a tutor of student athletes at Indiana University, I tutored students from all walks of life. I began by tutoring Biology and Spanish but the need for tutors in English, Writing, Chemistry and Statistics soon arose and I stepped up to fill those positions. Using previous knowledge from AP classes in high school, as well as recent knowledge gained from my classes, I was able to successfully convey new information in easy to understand and applicable terms to these students. Learning is a journey. I have a map but you have the wheels

I believe the best way to learn is to ask questions. The best thought process begins with asking the right questions. As a student, I find that knowing the right question was often as important as right answer. Taking this lesson into teaching, I find that getting the student to ask the right question makes all the difference in their understanding. During my time at the LRC, I developed a teaching style where I first understood the learning style of the student (i.e. visual or auditory) and then discovered why they wanted tutoring, wanted to focus on, and what they wanted to accomplish. I would then delve into the subject matter at hand, drawing, discussing, or having them draw any specific process or problem. Finally, I would have them tell me what they understood from the process that we just discussed. If I felt the student was confident in their abilities I would test them, if I found that they were not very confident in their abilities, I would discuss the lesson and confirm that they understood. I volunteer for HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar) every year. This program pushes facilitation, which is what I strive to do.
