If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds. Maybe you like to HEAR things explained, and you're a keen listener and like to hear things described clearly and specifically. Or maybe you'll say, "I FEEL like they want me to factor here" (as you tap the problem with your pencil). And I'll think, "Aha! FEEL. Maybe you learn by intuition and need to just jump in and work a problem or two with me step-by-step and discover the pattern of what's going on and pick up the FEEL of it. So... ... read more

I used to hate math, now I love it.

i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.
I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I have a background tutoring and running a tutoring center for STEM subjects at a community college for 3 years. I have been tutoring in some form for 6 years. I have a certification in tutoring ESL and several years experience in that.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all students can learn if they are taught in a style that is most conducive to their learning style and motivations. To make that happen for each of my students, I try to assess their specific learning styles early on and get to know what drives them and their goals. By teaching in a method that is more individualized to them I grab their attention, keep it and impart skills and lessons quickly and easily. Also, by focusing on the positive habits and actions the students take, providing proper motivations, and having continued discussions about goals I am able to increase the student's self-motivation, confidence, and independence.
My education experience spans many areas. I have taught in middle and high school classrooms, have tutored for public school programs, tutored at after school learning centers, tutored in church programs, and managed a learning center ... read more

I am a Certified Public Accountant with over 30 years of accounting and finance experience. Although I have no formal teaching degree, I feel that I would be an excellent tutor. First, I have successfully trained many employees over the years. Second, my two sons, ages 21 and 19 graduated numbers 2 and 1 in their high school classes, respectively. Now, both are "straight A" students at the University of Tennessee. Here, I feel that I have lead by example. Finally, my personality, while being friendly and patient, is also that of a highly motivated "over achiever" who loves to help others. I feel that I offer the best of both worlds, a love of learning in an academic environment as well as real-life experience in the business world.

The greatest reward one can achieve is to see the smile on someones face when they have found success in understanding something they felt impossible. I feel that there is no single method to learning, instead it is each individuals character that defines their own learning methods. I like to seek out what drives an individual to help them find their own passion about learning. With everything I do in life I go 150% and never give up. I hope that I can spread this outlook and motivation to others and help them find the true value in their education.
I am a senior studying Animal and Poultry Sciences at Virginia Tech. I have always had a personal passion for education and have enjoyed spreading the joys of learning and understanding to my peers, siblings, and friends. A Little Bit About Me...

To ensure that a range of learning styles is appropriately addressed, I have experience in individual meetings, group designed activities, mentoring activities, one-on-one tutoring and traditional lecture settings. As a teaching assistant of an upper-level non-majors genetics course, I was available to tutor students who worked either independently or collaborated in small groups during class time. As a tutor, These past experiences help me to provide a meaningful educational experience to your child. Moreover, what I most enjoy about teaching is interaction. Educators provide powerful role models, and I would take this role very seriously. Students may lack basic skills such as the study and time management skills necessary for success.

I think that all kids should be given an equal opportunity to thrive and succeed in their education no matter where they are from or their upbringing. I would love to continue with my biology studies by helping younger kids learn the ins and outs of biology assisting them in any way that I can.

I really enjoy working with young teens. I have worked in high schools for 25 years in Virginia and West Virginia. I have always had good rapport with teens and have enjoyed interacting with them. I have been trained in the Constructivist approach to teaching, but have had to change my style of teaching in order to cover materials necessary for SOL testing in recent years. I know that students retain more knowledge when they are involved in discovering new information and would love to have the latitude to teach in that manner again. I feel like I have made a difference in many young people's lives throughout my career.
