Through my present position as a Substitute Teacher for the School District of La Crosse, my position as a Preschool Teacher, as well as previous experience gained as a student teacher in three placements over the duration of a school year, and volunteer work with the Coulee Region Head Start and Horse Sense for Special Riders (HSSR), I have obtained a wide range of experience with children of varying backgrounds and learning abilities in the age ranges of birth to age eleven. I have experience developing differentiated lesson plans, working within a Professional Learning Community (PLC), and the use of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). I'm in my senior year of High School, I have worked with my siblings on their school all of my life. I've helped my little brother who has ADHD with his homework, I've worked with him through book projects, spelling tests, history homework, pretty much anything and everything. My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems. I am patient and have a talent for explaining technical information to non-technical people. As a graduate student in Evolutionary Biology at Texas A&M University, I worked as a teaching assistant in undergraduate ecology and zoology labs. I found this experience to be very rewarding and went on to pursue a MA in Instruction. Since completing both graduate degrees in 2008, I have been teaching undergraduate biology at Winona State University. I enjoy a variety of teaching settings.
