My comments on tutoring ADD/ADHD : Many of my students struggle with this learning issue, but can overcome and learn how to navigate with it!

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly. My work will improve writing techniques (including essays and basic writing skills), reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and literary creativity. For younger children I work with acquiring reading skills, word recognition, pattern recognition, spel ... read more

ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects! I have a mild/moderate special education credential and have worked with many students with ADD/ADHD.I work on study skills, work habits, fine motor skills, organization and social skills as they pertain to academics, which are areas of struggle for the students with these issues. I also help students with interest/career direction and testing. I have worked with curriculum such as Touch Math, Step Up to Writing, Explode the Code, and Handwriting Without Tears. 15 years of teaching children with special needs has given me a great understand of what your child needs. I have a passion for teaching and love to work with all students, seeing results in growth of self esteem, knowledge and the meeting of their potential. I have 15 years' experience in the special education field. Since I started my career, I have learned the art of communication and the ability to work with students of all ages, parents, and staff in consulting and educational interaction. I have a Master's degree in special education and hold both my clear Level 2 mild/moderate special education credential and my multiple teaching credential, as well as my autism authorization. ADD/ADHD is one of my top subjects!

Many of my previous jobs have surrounded helping others. Whether that was through tutoring and teaching or customer service. Growing up I also tutored my younger sister and my cousin who has a learning disability. I have always been passionate about helping others, especially through education. Currently, I am pursuing a major in Sociology at the University of California Berkeley in hopes of becoming a teacher for K-12 students and eventually a college professor.

Make school work.

I have been in education for 16 years. I specialize in working with students with ADD/ADHD, specific learning disabilities as well as students who underachieve. I have a Master's Degree in Special Education and have successfully worked with students all over the Bay Area to help them realize their full potential.
Not all students are successful and the trick is to identify the reasons behind the lack of success. The issues that students have with school are diverse; procrastination, lack of organization, failure to plan, lack of awareness, ineffective habits, learning disabilities, and differences are all possible explanations for school failure. I work with students one on one to help them pinpoint where things break down for them and then work with them to find strategies to help them manage the skills and material they are asked to learn and master. I am there to guide, not ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love to tutor because it gives me an opportunity to help students build their skills and to teach them that they have the ability to learn anything, they want to learn and are willing to put their mind, determination and dedication into. I strongly believe that most if not all students are capable of learning anything they truely desire to learn, if they are willing to work hard and be determined to acquire the knowledge. I believe that this is possible with a teacher or tutor that has the skills and dedication to transfer their knowledge or drive for knowledge to their students.
My Teaching Style is to build a relationship with the student and their family. That is based on trust, confidence and a great deal of praise. Everyones performance is driven by the encouragement that they get on a daily basis. So a very important part of my teaching style is to include the whole family. ... read more

My doctoral dissertation examined college-level remedial reading and writing students in an effort to determine if adding online instruction to traditional instruction would improve student performance. My dissertation explored five hypotheses, and I found statistical significance in all five; thereby supporting the notion that adding online instruction to traditional instruction can improve student learning. While I was a doctoral student, I was also a Merit Scholar. In addition to my teaching, I have also tutored elementary, high school, and college students in reading, writing, and the understanding of Literature. I have also worked a great deal with ESL students.
My love of teaching is stimulated most when working with students who require the most assistance. Through my study in Educational Psychology, I have learned that all students have their own learning styles; I am able ... read more

For the last two years I have worked as a tutor with elementary aged children on phonemic awareness, comprehension, improving analytical ability, and basic math skills. While teaching and tutoring, I incorporate the child's prior knowledge while introducing new concepts through hands-on, child centered curriculum. I develop tricks, with help from the child, which will help them retain the information learned. During the day, I am an elementary substitute teacher. Prior to getting my degree, I was a preschool teacher and nanny.
I believe that every child is an individual with a distinctive story. Embracing such stories, I will make a profound difference on my students. Validating students’ abilities, experiences, and interests creates a trusting atmosphere. My role as teacher is to guide my students into authentic learning. For students to construct knowledge, they need the opport ... read more

I am a first generation college graduate from Saint Mary's College of CA with a degree in Sociology/Anthropology which has allowed me to work with a variety of age groups in different socioeconomic backgrounds. I have extensive experience in writing research reports and tutoring experience in a variety of subjects from K-12.
I love making a difference in a child's life, whether it is academic or to get them organized to be more successful in the long run. I feel that I am patient and lack judgment on the child as each child is different and learns in different ways. After struggling with my academic career, I feel that my best way of helping the child is help them since I did not always have the resources available to succeed. I want them to feel that they can do anything.

I believe that education should be tailored to the needs, abilities, and learning styles of each student. I believe in consistent positive reinforcement and praise, and in tracking and measuring skills so that students have evidence of their progress. I hope to help students discover the intrinsic rewards of learning, but respect the joy and relief students feel when their goal is passing a difficult subject for promotion.
As a lifelong learner, I'm always motivated by students who have a curiosity for improving their own skills. I have a BA in liberal arts from Vassar College and a MS in Education from Queens College, which I earned through the full-time work/part-time study New York City Teaching Fellowship. I am fluent in Spanish, conversant in Japanese and French, and am always excited about learning more languages. As a special education teacher, I've worked with large classro ... read more

Sound understanding of theoretical and applied mathematical and statistical models heavily used in commerce, industry, government, scientific, non-profit, and academic settings. Working knowledge of computer programming, data modeling, and effective analytical writing, presentations, and reporting using modern software packages relevant to students interests and abilities.

As a graduate of the Early Childhood field, working with children is something that I have always enjoyed. I had opportunity to further my education with a teaching credential in Early Childhood Special Education while teaching with a school district. As I continued to further my education I had many opportunities working with young children with special needs in small group, as well as one on one settings.
Children are very precious individuals. Having the opportunity to work with children is something I enjoy very much. I belive every child deserves the opportunity to learn. I believe that a teacher needs to faciliate the environment for effective learning to take place. Children learn in many different ways and each child has it in them to learn they just need to be given the opportunity to explore and discover.
