Spelling is one of my top subjects! Because I used phonics to teach all four of my children to read, they have all become good spellers. I used Spelling Power which is a program good for ages K-12 and I would probably use it to help tutor your child as well. I have also used it to instruct a dyslexic adult reader and another adult learner whose first language is Chinese.

I have home schooled four children ( two of whom were foreign speaking adopted from Russian) through 12th grade. All four are now in college. I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “bigger picture”. For that reason, I ask a lot of questions to ensure that a student is not just learning by rote, but understands a topic within its larger context. In that way, he or she is learning not only how to solve a particular problem or answer a specific question, but also how to apply it to other problems in the future.
